I was wondering if I could run 2 modems. One would be for downstairs use, and one would be for upstairs use with my x-box and another computer. They would be going into different phone jacks but I was wondering if that would work.

Think of it like having 2 phones ....

- on 1 line ... 1 at at time (either will work)
- on 2 lines ... anytime (alone or together)

In response to "acklan" suggestion (who gave a "thumbs down"):

*** ... how can you dial (& get successful handshaking) from 2 dialup devices using 1 line ... having 2 accounts means nothing unless each modem is able to independantly dial into them .. if the line is in use by one modem the other modem cannot perform handshaking & hence get logged in.

When the second modem tries to dial out on a phone line that's already used, the second modem will pick up the line, possibly causing the first modem to lose connection, and unable to dial because the line already in use.

The asker is inquiring about a scenario with 2 dialup modems ... ***

instead of running 2 modems get a wireless router and a wireless card for one computer and run the xbox and other computer straight out of the router they usually have 4 or so hookups

Yes. It will work provided you have two dialup internet accounts. You are aware that you can get cable and ADSL lite for less that the cost of one dial up account. Even satellite is cheaper than a full feature dialup.
