Global warming is any trend of the planet's climate to grow warmer over time. It is a cyclic occurence that has happened on a fairly regular basis since the beginning. This current warming cycle started at the end of the last ice age, aapproximately 10-15,000 years ago. The most common consensus I've seen is that humankind is prolonging the trend, as the cycle should have turned cooler several decades ago. The planet doesn't operate on a fixed timeline, though, so its hard to say.
There have been numerous occasions in the past when it has been much warmer than it is now, evidenced by the fact that Alaska and northern Canada were once lush with tropical plants, and Antarctica was at times bare of ice.

Guess we'll see how it goes. The greenhouse effect that contributes to the current warming will eventually thicken to the point of shielding the planet, at which time things will cool rapidly. Hope you have a good sweater.
