No teas are safe.

The caffeine and the herbs are NOT good. She should also stay away from Soda, coffee, un-pastureized dairy, alcohol, etc.

Her doctor should give her a list of do's and don'ts.

She should follow it.

Wegmans is the only place I know to buy "pregnancy tea." It's got herbal supplements and things that the FDA has said are all pregnancy safe (though all herbal things should still be mentioned to your doctor, whether the FDA says they're okay or not). I bought a small box to try but didn't care for it. I like black & orange pekoe teas, this was more like a green tea, so maybe that's why, but my sister-in-law swears by the stuff. I gave her the rest of my box and I thought she was going to cry she was so happy!

small amounts of caffeine are considered okay (think 12 oz. regular soda per day or 45.6 mg is considered the safe limit, they suggest less than this in the first trimester), a very strongly brewed tea should (at the most) have about half that, so if she likes strong tea she can still get away with 2 cups a day and be safe. I've gone over that before (i thought there was less caffeine in my tea...) and my pregnancy is just fine, it's just important not to do it frequently.

I know there's some taste difference, but if she's really gotta have more than 2 cups a day (3 if they're weak) then it's time to look into decaf. Decaf black tea is the easiest to find, but also has the biggest taste difference, so suggest she look for "orange spice" or something with a little extra flavor so she might not notice the difference.

Good luck & Congrats!

Almost all herbal teas are safe; they are not actually made from tea leaves, but from herbs, fruit and flower parts. I say "almost" because there are some herbs one should not have while pregnant, but the box it comes in should tell you that.

Black tea (the most common tea, which is what most people make iced tea with) is fine, unless she drinks a gallon a day or something. In that case, just switch to decaf. Tea is actually good for your heart (antioxidants). Check out the Celestial Seasons website, they have lots of good info on all types of teas.

I drank plenty of decaf iced tea all the time with both pregnancies.

Tea typically has more caffieine than coffee, so she should probaby switch to decaffienated tea for a while. She can also get pregnancy tea (one brand is Traditional Medicinals) that can promote good health during pregnancy and may help with morning sickness if she has any.

Hope this helps!

Chamomile tea is safe. Any non-herbal tea is safe, especially the ones that are decaf. Google "herbal teas in pregnancy" to get the list of off-limits teas.
