In many situations the screw has to match other slotted screws in a particular assembly. Also there are times when a machine screw needs to be adjusted a certain number of turns and the slot makes an easier indexing device. On some things the slotted screw makes for easier disassembly/reassembly without a tool at hand ( a la the tried-and-true butterknife ). I guarantee anyone that, with a properly fitted screwdriver, a slotted screw will hold things more tightly than any Phillips or Robertson.

My opinion is they're greater value-effective to fabricate than different forms of screws, so human beings seeking to shrink expenses could purchase a affordable screw. My adventure is that saving on the sadness ingredient is incredibly worth getting a greater high priced screw. It will advance speed, ergo productiveness, besides the reality that it expenses greater. short answer is you get what you pay for.

Flat head screws are made to be flush with the surface. As to slotted, I don't know.

Flat head screws are good for work that need a flush finish, like another piece of wood that goes on top of the screws.
They are ideal for using dowels in a recessed screw hole and get an almost invisible seam.

Flat head screw good for holding very thin material and it will hold more area with less thickness. The other type slotted screws need more thicker head to make the hole and it is not good for thinner material.

I bet they still make them because they are cheap and easy to manufacture compared to phillips or square drive. BTW, I believe we will be asking the same question about phillips screws in 50 years, because square drives are so much better than phillips.
