George Halas NFL Hall of Fame coach played rightfield briefly for the Yankees in 1919 although Sammy Vick became the regular outfielder while Halas began his NFL career better known as "Papa Bear".

George Halas was a right fielder for the New York Yankees before Babe Ruth; and of course he is a Hall of Famer (for football). But his last game in the majors was July 5, 1919 so he was not the right fielder immediately before Ruth was acquired.
