how would start an essay that is trying to convince a school to get everyone their own laptop?

You could go through the reasons why: such as it makes taking notes easier, if a person misses class they can watch a webcast of the class, the costs of books are more, having electronic books help to save trees.

Oooh, niiicee idea.
Anyway, you should start it with your idea topic. But without your "I think" "I believe" "I want", etc, etc. The readers already know it's your opinion, so all you have to do is convince them. Maybe you should start with "__ School should get every student their own laptop".. or something along the lines of that.
