I have a debate competition on Saturday and I want to know your opinions on if people who take a congressional oath of office should have to use the bible. Put as much information as you want to.

Thanks for the help, so far...now the debate event I'm in is Student Congress, so I'm wondering would you be for or against a piece of legislation saying "We should use the bible with a congressional oath." I'm a Christian and believe in God 100% but I want to know your opinions.

I don't believe so. Our judicial system has changed its ethics from saying "Do you swear or affirm to tell the truth..." So our congressional leaders should be granted the same courtesy. In no congressional position does it require a person to be of Christian faith. So if you do not believe in the Christian faith using the bible would be meaningless. As an atheist, I would guiltlessly swear on anything on the bible. It has no meaning to me and therefore should not have meaning to everyone. Beings it is a tradition we shouldn’t fight the morality of it. As an atheist I will still say the “Pledge of Allegiance” as it was written and observe the principles of our forefathers.

Quote: "I'm wondering would you be for or against a piece of legislation saying "We should use the bible with a congressional oath." "

wouldn't such a law be unconstitutional? it would be establishing a state religion.

I as a christian who lives my life by the bible feel that its almost an insult to the bible with as much corruption and lying that goes on in the government. Besides the biblical teaching of seperation of church and state, Jesus Himself says to "swear not at all. not by heaven for it's God's throne, nor by the earth, for it's his footstool. So, let your yes be yes and your no be no. Any thing more than this comes from evil." (paraphrased)

I don't think they should have to. This country was founded on the basis of seperation of church and state. With no "official religion". So a person should not have to swear on the bible and they should be allowed to swear on whatever book they follow. Seperation of church and state. That is the only reason one needs.

No, part of the rights of this country is freedom to participate in whatever religion you want to, this even includes not participating in a religion also.
