Visit your local STAPLES store. I just saw a 1 GB Thumb drive at my local store for just $14. This was on the SPECIALS table. It was the PNY brand. GO FOR IT.
Let's say that you bought that, and had trouble. Keep your reciept and TAKE IT BACK. That's the reason for buy at STAPLES... They are AWESOME. (Hit the Easy Button while you are there)/
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Thumb drives, also known as pin drives, or memery sticks, connect to the USB port, so any brand, at any capacity, can be used.
They come in these sizes.
32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 MB
1, 2, 4, 8 (hitting the stores now) GB
16, 32, 64, and 128 GB ones will be coming out every few months.
To get the size you need, consider this.
Music files may be 3 to 20 MB.
Movie files may be as much as 4 GB.

Your pretty much safe in buying any type of flash memory right now, if you have Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, any new version of Linux, or Mac OS 10 you don't need any drivers to setup, and with the prices so low go to the biggest size that your wallet would allow, if is just for document files and pictures, I would recommend you buying a 2Gb. If you plan to store music, pictures, files and video, then try to go bigger, because with music and video you tend to fill the space very quick. Hope this helps.
