As far as light goes there are only 3 colours, red, green and blue, but there are combinations of the three.
red+blue=magenta
red+green=yellow
blue+green=cyan
red+blue+green=white
So as far as the electromagnetic spectrum is concerned the 7 visible colours of light are:
white
red
green
blue
yellow
cyan
magenta

Highly arbitrary, but...red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Roy G. Biv is the mnemonic.
