Mystical teachings say the astral double is like a "spirit body" or "energy form" that you can detach from your physical body in order to go explore, gather information, etc.

Many theorize that this astral double leaves your body nightly when you sleep and/or dream, and that you aren't aware of it. And your normal waking consciousness is not imbued in your astral double when this occurs.

But there are several books, tapes, etc., that are designed to teach you to visualize your astral double and place your waking consciousness into it in order to experience a conscious out-of-body experience.

If the astral double exists, I think it is mainly a construct of the mind because in our normal physical incarnation we are accustomed to thinking of ourselves as having some shape, some form, so it is a visualization tool designed to help facilitate conscious astral projection (i.e. out of body experience).

There is lots of information out there on this. Good luck in your research.

The function of the Astral Double is to enable authors who write about Astral Doubles to make a lot of money selling books to a gullible public.
