Im getting a pet hedge hog monday, but i have a few questions before I do so. I have other types of pets in the home including dogs cats birds fish and a turtle of course so im kinda worried that if one of the dogs was to touch it that it may wound her pretty bad. I also wanted to know what kind of diet would be healthy for my hedge hog, what kind of toys it would prefer and also what temperater or climate it needs in its cage to remain healthy. I also wanted to know if its temperment will change overtime so its not as skitish. also should i use anything special to handle this type of creature. all answers to this question are greatly appretiated. any additional advice on this as well would be greatly appreciated.

ok, so we do own hedgehogs... several in fact. your best bet is to get onto an e-groups list such as Hedgehog_Help on yahoo.
I wouldnt worry too much about the poggie with the dogs. We had one hedgehog that backed a full grown doberman into a corner! (seriously, i swear!)
As far as handeling and temperment go, the more you handle them (nicely) the nicer they will be. The reverse is also true. If you handle them badley they will behave badley. Just be nice and quiet around the new addition until he/she settles in more.
temperature.... Hedgehogs like it more warm then cold. They will go into a hibernation of sorts if they get too cold. so keep the area will you will have him most between 68-82degrees farenheight.
Toys.... well, to begin with, an old tolit paper roll is a wonderful toy! just make sure there is no leftover TP on it before you give it to them. Also highly recommend getting them a wheel to play on. We make a great wheel here for our hedgies, and if you send me an e-mail, i will send you our ordering information.
You also MUST make sure that they have a place to go during the day. Such as an old box with a hole cut out of one side. Hedgehogs are burrowing animals, and they are also Diurnal. they will come out every now and then during the day, but they are mostly night animals.

One last thing, if will send me an e-mail with the subject line of "new Poggie owner" I will forward you a collection of information that we have gathered over the years. This will include information on pretty much everything you need to know to have a long and happy time with your new pet. the e-mail is pony30189@yahoo.com

Good luck!
