Actually given a choice Superman would like to duck the bullets too! but he is too slow for them! So when the relatively large revolver is thrown, the lazy guy ducks, but he has to brave the bullets !! Think a large giant cricketer who ducks easily at a bouncer, but is trapped lbw on the straighter one!!

Because the prop man forgot to use the foam-rubber revolver! Actually, it's more dramatic. Also, in the fictional world, maybe it's an automatic reaction to anything coming at your face.

That happened in the old 50's TV show. I would assume George Reeves just did waht he was told and never questioned anything in the script.
Or that prop gun REALLY hurt!

Maybe he's a gun control advocate and doesn't want to worry about the temptation to use it?

Perhaps gun components are made of kyptonite?
