If she's pueto rican and NOT black, then it's obvious why she'd be offended when you all her black. because she's not! She identifies herself as a puerto rican, so you should respect that and not try to put her in a box she's not comfortable with.

Personally I think you're a racist but I think it's ok. I see nothing wrong with being proud of your race, right or wrong and you have the right to express it. Your friend may have an allegiance order where her nationality supersedes her racial identification unless she's deluded to believe that being a Puerto Rican is a race instead of a blend of some other races. Actually what may be strange is that your friend is a bigot of another sort, "colorism" is a term most people are not familiar with but those know about it may describe your friend to a "tee" and may be the reason why she reacted to the way you spoke to her or others when referring to her being Black.

If you are black and someone insisted that you were Egyptian would you just say ok I'm Egyptian? Some people are proud of their origins and chances are if she's Puerto Rican she's Puerto Rican; perhaps you're not too cool with Puerto Ricans for some reason. Does she insist you be or act like someone you're not? Just let her be herself. If she acts similar so what, many different ethnicities share common habits or traditions or customs it doesn't mean that Spanish are Mexicans or Koreans are Vietnamese.

Actually being Black sounds better than being Puerto Rican. Pueto Ricans have a perception of being rude and ******** people. Blacks can come from anywhere, if you're black, then you're black. It doesn't matter if you're Jamaican-black or Ethiopian Black, if your root is black. You are black. Most Puerto Ricans though, are proud of being Puerto Rican. I don't know what they are proud of, it's not like Puerto Ricans have a special culture or anything.

Because being black isn't exactly something that's seen as wonderful, thanks to the stereotypes that are circulated around the world. But I find nothing wrong with her saying she's Puerto Rican. That's just fine. She is what she says she is. Don't let that bother you. Her saying she's black won't benefit or be a burden to you.
And from what I understand now-a-days, ethnicity-claiming is a popular trend. I always see people saying "I'm 19% this .00001% that and .0023% so-and-so" rather than just flat out saying "I'm white" or "I'm black" or "I'm Latino". They believe it creates more interest in their character, I suppose.

Well things are different in other countries, people in other countries don't feel so compelled to fit in a ethnic group. There are a lot of Latinos that do consider themselves Black such as Zoe Saldana, Christina Milan, Alfonso Libero, Merlin Santana etc.. Your friend definitely has African ancestry but does also have Spaniard and probably Indian ancestry. Now in places outside of the U.S, if you only have one drop of Black blood you aren't considered Black but mixed. Also maybe it's because of the image of African Americans, that negative image that media constantly plays on, might have her feeling ashamed to be Black. Some Africans I know say that they aren't Black when obviously they are. But you know everyone doesn't fit into the this crazy racial category, I mean she is probably of mixed heritage like most Blacks outside of Africa so maybe in Puerto Rico she isn't considered Black.

Because she has no education. And to the dummy, Puerto Rico is not a race it is a place which would make it her nationality not race. If a man was was born in Germany yet his parents were Chinese, if you saw him in the street would you say look at that German guy? No u wouldn't I am black, but i once worked with a Dominican guy who said I'm not black I'm Dominican and he was darker than me or a moonless night. You see some of our brothers in the Caribbean and southern part of the western hemisphere have been brainwashed by the media. They are purposely kept uneducated, because uneducated people are easier to psychologically control. Blacks in America have become to educated aware of their own culture and story beyond slavery. We have learned to do what a lot of Latinos of African descent have not. Learn to love ourselves and kind. We are not playing their little games anymore so they have decided to to enter a new player in the game. Hispanics. If you listen to racist rhetoric they are now trying to Pitt Hispanics=(Spanish speaking Negroids), against Blacks=(English speaking Negroids). You see a white man once told me, "the white man conquered the earth by Dividing; (pitting tribes against each other), and Conquering (stepping in when the fighting was over and taking control. If you go to any of these Hispanic countries listen to their views of Blacks in America , do u believe black people are over their slandering themselves, I think not! yet someone is. And it can't be a few random racists'. Look at your average business:Highest pay Corporate level 95% White. Mid level pay Management level, 50% white, the rest Latino and Black. Lowest pay associate level 95% Latino. You have become the new economic slave. If every Hispanic immigrant demanded fair wages 15 years ago they would have aimed nuclear missiles at the borders and dared someone to cross it. So please girlfriend don't be angry with her because she is uneducated and clueless. But also remember these people who do not love self and kind are a danger to you and themselves. She will sell you out in a second just for the approval of a white person. Just know that one day she will be begging to be recognized as black. But only when she finds out how White America, (not all but the majority) really feels about Hispanics. Know thyself!!!!!

**Who is "Black"? What is "Black"? How do you define a certain group as "Black" and "non-Black"? Are Haitians "Black" or are the Haitian?
1. Because you look like a "Black" person does not mean you are "Black". Your friend identifies as Puerto Rican.
2. "Hispanics" do not want to be associated with "Black" in no way, shape or form. They can have the thickest of hair, broadest of nose and eat collard greens all day...but they ARE NOT "Black".

Puerto Ricans don't like to be called: Mexican, White, or Black. They like to be called what they are ~ Puerto Rican. They're proud of their heritage.
