August 1945 to the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Some say the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, which was another sentinal event in world history.

But old habits die hard, consider the near world cataclysm that happened in POST cold war era in 1995 when the Russians activated their 'suitcase' with the nuclear launch codes for the first time in history....after thinking that a scientific satellite launched in Norway was a pre-emptive attack by NATO against Moscow....so can we say the Cold War is truly over????

there is no offiacal starting but the earliest is before World War Two ended, Since Germany was split between the major Allied forces. Russia which was stronger than the other countries in Western Europe built a heavier army than the others, therefore getting the West to even the odds, it was ended in 1991 when the Berlin wall came to a fall because of Ronald Reagan triumphet Buy out over arms of the Soviet Union hope this could be of some use

By the standard definition, the Cold War began in 1945 at the end of World War II.

It supposedly ended in 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The reality is a little more complicated, as it always is. Tension between the communists in Russia and the capitalists of Western countries like England was tense before 1945. And, as tensions between North and South Korea illustrate, some elements of the Cold War are STILL with us!

The Cold War was the period of conflict, tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies from the mid 1940s until the early 1990s. The main U.S. allies were Western Europe, Japan and Canada. The main Soviet allies were Eastern Europe and (until the Sino-Soviet split) China. Throughout the period, the rivalry between the two superpowers was played out in multiple arenas: military coalitions; ideology, psychology, and espionage; military, industrial, and technological developments; costly defense spending; a massive conventional and nuclear arms race; and many proxy wars.

This was a period of heightened tension between the US and the former Soviet Union that lasted from shortly after World War II until the 1980's--approximately 40 years +/-.

It was dubbed The Cold War because we weren't actually in armed conflict.
