Im in an intro chemistry class and we are learning electronic configuration. Can someone explain the orbitals on the periodic table and how it relates to the electronic configuration of an element. For example, our instructor said Cl is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5..

Electrons are attracted to the nucleus. Sometimes they actually fall in but this is rare. Electrons try to get as close to the nucleus as they can. They crowd in but we have noticed that there are rules about how they can crowd in. These rules are part of the theory of quantum mechanics. Simply put, electrons tend to form pairs and the pairs tend to form squares, that is a group of 1, 4, 9 ... It is like an upside-down pyramid hotel. The first floor has one room. This room is called "s". There is always 1 s room per floor. On the second floor there are 4 rooms. There is an s room and 3 p rooms. Atoms are incredibly obsessed with having their floors either completely full or completely empty. For Chlorine we see that the 1s room is full with 2 electrons. A very happy first floor. Next on the second floor we also see a full s orbital. We also see the 3 p orbitals filled. This makes the 4 rooms on floor 2 (2 squared = 4) full. Now on the third floor we see that one p room does not have a roommate. This makes chlorine in the class of atoms that need just 1 electron to make it happy. Atoms seem to care most about their s and p orbitals. There are a total of 8 electrons that are involved with these two orbitals. If an atom is a 6, that means that it has 6 out of 8. It would like to get interest in 2 more electrons. If an atom is a 1 then it does not even try to get 7 more. That 1 extra electron is basically an orphan.

If the element has a million electron in the outer shell that's in team a million. If the element has 2 electrons in the outer shell that's in team 2. so which you only bypass on.... yet differently is that if it has a million shell, that's in era a million that's the row. Likewise, if it has 2 shells, that's in era 2 that's the 2d row commencing from Lithium.
