P=perimiter - the area around the rectangle (must be a rectangle)
W= width two sides
W+60 is the width of other 2 sides
Perimiter is the length of the sides added together so add them together.
w+w+ (w+30) + (w+30) = 460 ft.
4w +60 = 460
4w +60-60 = 460-60
4w = 400
w = 100

You equation would be:
2w + 2(w+30) = 460
2w + 2w + 60 = 460
4w = 460 - 60
4w = 400
w = 100
And I got this equation by adding all the sides together to get the perierimeter. The formula to find perimeter is:
2 length + 2 width = perimeter

perimeter is to add up all 4 sides. if the left side is w, so is the right side. and if the bottom is w + 30, so is the top. So the perimeter is left + right + top + bottom. w + w + w + 30 + w + 30 = 460. Then combine all the w's together, combine the constants, and then divide by the coefficient in front of w. This will tell you the answer for the left and right hand side. Then add 30 to get the lenght of the top/bottom

Okay, simple problem, now as you should know, a square has 4 equal sides. So, basically if you add up all the sides, it should equal the perimeter of the square (Which should be a rectangle if "+30" is added) (Which you stated as 460 feet.) So your equation should be: (Added Parenthesis for help explaining)
(W)+(W+30)+(W)+(W+30)=460
4W+60=460
4W=400
W=100
There you go!

The formula for a perimeter (P) is simply 2W time 2l
So, let w equal the width and l equal w+30.
Set it up thus......
460=2W + 2(w+30)
Now solve for w and that is the width. Plug this value into the length's side and you will have the length.

ok well P = 2l + 2w
2w+ 2(w+30)=460
2w +2w +60=460
4w +60=460
4w=400
w=100
