SS will pay a death benefit for burial, it will pay a benefit to a minor child losing a parent until age 18, it will provide a payment when a worker is permanently disabled, a payment to surviving spouse in some situations, & of course the retirement benefit we think of more traditionally.

I know if you have a mental illness and are unable to work, you will pull in social security benefits. Also, if you are under 18 and one of your parents dies, you receive benefits until your 18th birthday. I believe you receive social security if your spouse dies as well. Other than those, I have no clue.
