My downstairs toilet started making a loud whining sound when I flush it. I am told the cause is "too much air". How do I fix this?
Thanks!

barbou is right. replace the fill valve. It will cost around ten bucks for a new one. Flush the toilet to get as much water as possible and place a bucket under the line going into the toilet. Shutoff the water at the stop coming out of the wall. Undo the two nuts from the fill valve. one holds the supply line on and the other holds the fill valve to the toilet. Remove the small tube that is on the flush valve going to the fill valve. Replace tho old with the new and install it in reverse order of which you took the old one out. You are probably wise to replace the flapper too. they are usually a couple bucks and they hold on by two hooks at the sides of the flush valve. This should fix your problem.

On top of plastic thing, right where the rod and ball float connect are 3 screws. Remove those. There is a flat rubber washer in there that has deteroriated and/or accumulated deposits on it.

You can clean off the deposits on that washer and the surface it contacts with ordinary LIME AWAY Spray it good with that and rinse off the deposits wiping them away with a rag. Lime Away can be purchased in Grocery Store .

You can also take that rubber part to the hardware and buy a replacement for about 50 cents.

you need to replace the fill valve, it has built up deposits in the old one. while you are at the hardware store go ahead and pick up a flapper too.
