insects and bugs are two separate species. Can someone please clarify this for me, and I'd love it if you named your source so I can show my daughter. She flat out refuses to believe that her teacher could be wrong. I thank you in advance for your help!

First of all, remind your daughter that teachers are human, and thus fallible. Second, your daughter's teacher is a complete moron. Insects have 6 legs.

Definition of insect:
Any of numerous usually small arthropod animals of the class Insecta, having an adult stage characterized by three pairs of legs and a body segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen and usually having two pairs of wings. Insects include the flies, crickets, mosquitoes, beetles, butterflies, and bees.

Definition of bug:
An insect or similar organism, such as a centipede or an earwig. See Regional Note at lightning bug.

So all insects are bugs, though not all bugs are insects, in the same fashion that all humans are mammals, but not all mammals are humans.
