I have heard people use it before but I still don't get it. What does it mean?

it refers to the Fifith ammendment of the constitution which basically states that you do not have to testify if you are going to incriminate yourself. example: if you were called to testify in your friends trial, but you had committed a crime connected to the trial, you could "plead the fifth" while on the witness stand. People also use it as a catch phrase, like if your buddy wants to know if you hooked up with that ugly chick from the night before and you say "I plead the fifth" cause you did.
