In high school and earlier, no, it definitely shouldn't be allowed.

In college, it depends. If you have a free study session to sit around and do homework, sure. But if it's during class, a lecture, or something like that, then it shouldn't be allowed. For one, it can distract other people. And if you're going to text message and listen to music and not pay attention anyway, why even bother going to class?

It shouldn't be allowed because it distracts the student, and he doesn't remember a thing, and then gets bad grades, etc...
Nor should anybody listen to music, because they wouldn't listen to a thing, and get bad grades again, and it's really bad for their future, it looks like nothing, but it's worth a lot to pay attention to what the teacher says, even if sometimes thay are boring.
Your future is more important than listening for a little while to music and learn nothing.

Before college, no it shouldn't be allowed.

In college, sure. Prefer if it weren't allowed in actual classes, but profs should feel free to kick people out of the room for using them if they want. After all, why should they be a distraction to other kids if they're not going to pay attention? Freedom and responsibility goes more than just one way.

Depends. There is no reason you need to text in school. You go there to learn, not be distracted with toys.

Some teachers allow music (I do during work time), others don't at all.

Yes, it should not be allowed. You are at school to learn not listen to music or talk to friends all day. The same goes for the workplace.

I think the main idea is that it should not be allowed in the classroom itself. There really is no reason to not let kids use them in the hallways or cafeteria or wherever unless they're worried about stealing and the problems they'll have with kids crying to them about that.

In a large lecture setting (unless the professor is particularly strict when it comes to paying attention to his lecture) I can't see where it should be an issue. If you choose not to pay attention and aren't disrupting the rest of the class, who cares what you're doing...its your loss in the end. In smaller classes, discussions, or labs, definitely not.

Well, I don't think it should be against the rules to bring them to school, but I think it should be against the rules to actually use them during class. It's a personal choice if you want to bring it to school or not - it's your fault if it's lost or stolen, so it's your risk to take. I think that students should only use them during their breaks. (This is also a better idea, so that your iPod or cell phone isn't confiscated)

that stuff is fine. as long as it isn't disrupting class or the learing of everybody. if it is disrupting class or any of that, it should be taken away.
all I'm saying is that there are responsible people in this world and i don't think a small group of individuals should be able to ruin it for the people that are doing the right thing.
