The M Roadster uses the engine from the last gen. M3 which was available with a Steptronic style transmission. The Roadster is not available with this option however; so how would I go about, first of all getting one of those Steptronic systems, and who would I get to install it into a M Roadster for me? Is it possible? The BMW dealership where I bought the M isn't being very responsive so I was looking for some outside input. Thanks.

This is a tough job. And it is very unlikely a dealership can do the job. By the way, do you mean the SMG transmission? The SMG tranny is a still uses a clutch just like a manual, the only difference is that the clutch is controlled via computer. The steptronic is a real automatic with no clutch, heavy, complicated, and slow.

I think it is possible to convert to SMG. My best guess to doing it is to get the SMG tranny, the electronics, shifter/paddles, and a custom driveshaft to retrofit to a z4 chassis. Maybe also need to have a custom transmission mount made.

You'll probably have to find a BMW performance shop to do this type of job. My guess is that it will cost over $10k (parts and labor).

You want to take the stick and turn it into an auto?

It takes more than just a tranny swap. First, you have to make sure the step tranny will even fit in the roadster. You'll also need all the computers and wiring to get everything talking to each other. It's not going to be an easy swap, if it's even possible.
