You can tell by tapping on it with something hard. Driftwood will make a hollow sound, almost a thud because it is soft where a resin log makes a clear tapping noise. Typically you can tell by looking at them as well. No matter how good a job resin logs don't look real.

Real wood peels and splinters just by picking at it, resin is plastic and cannot be peeled nor will it splinter with just your fingers. Also, while resin decorations can look quite realistic, they will never look as real as the real thing.

Resin is plastic-- drill ahole where it won't show and see if sawdust comes out.
