It's difficult to say. Humans managed to survive for thousands of years without petroleum but the above answer illustrates how much we have come to rely on it. Alternative fuels could be used but unfortunately we have over populated the world due to raping the worlds resources on an unprecedented scale.

I'm going to say I reckon I could live some time without it as I am a fan of Ray Mears (www.raymears.com to get an idea about where he is coming from.) I would of course have to move away from over populated areas as they would become some sort of nightmare if they had no petroleum.

everything into your life and everything on the way out of your life moves by truck at some point - better make some soy diesel available at a competetive price before you take my petroleum away or you won't get any food clothing or shelter while you are sitting there neck deep in sludge and waste that we haven't hauled away.
