I have no clue what to do next summer...I don't want to return to my family. I want to stay free from their controlling clutches. It would be pointless to go back, there's nothing there for me anyways. I guess I could just rent an apartment every summer?

Yup, renting an apartment for the summer is probably the best option.

If there are places around your school where fliers are posted, check them out, because you can usually find people looking to sublease their apartments for the summer. These are people who have year-long leases on their apartments, but for some reason or another don't stick around for the summer, so they need someone else to stay there for them. It's usually cheaper than renting your own "new" apartment, because you don't have to scrounge up furniture. Plus, most complexes don't have such short-term leases available (you can probably find some though).

There also might be websites for apartments around you. There is a website (http://www.boilerapartments.com) that has a comprehensive listing of apartments and houses for rent around my university. You can search by building type, number of rooms, rental cost, subleases, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I really recommend trying to find a website like that for your college.

http://www.apartmentguide.com is another place to start.

A lot of big amusement parks, like Six Flags, will put college students in boarding housing for the summer if they work in the parks. There will be lots of other college students working there and you get free or cheap park admission when you're not working. Plus, the one in Gurnee, IL is right by Chicago and the Gurnee Mills outlet mall for sightseeing! Good luck! Enjoy the summer wherever you go!
