International licences are not required ... but a valid one from somewhere is. And a credit card

You will need a driver's license, but just the one you use at home. I lived there for 10 years and didn't get a Mexican license for a long time. I never needed an international license.

You need to get an "International" license before you leave the States, or you will have to take a Mexican driving test and get a license there...

You will need your American home license with out I don't beleave you will be able to get one. Most of the rental agencys are american ones so be prepared to spend five to seven hundred dollars per week. very expensive here because they are catering to mostly americans that come here with out transportation.
