I have used a program called XPlay which lets you view what is on your iPod and drag/drop files onto your Harddrive.
Not sure if you can get a free or demo version as I paid for mine.
What you can do, is just plug in the iPod and through Windows Explorer, find the device as a drive and open it.
There is a hidden folder on the drive so in Windows Explorer you need to go to Tools ->Folder Options->View and change it to show hidden files and folders.
You can then open the hidden folder and will find a many foldes labelled F01,F02, etc. All the music files are jumbled within those but you can then copy/paste any music files onto your Harddrive.
Hope that helps.
