The City of Toronto has a downspout disconnect program in which I participated. Initially I had the water go into a rain barrel but the bend in the downspout, before the run off pipe began, would always freeze and spill water out on to the walkway between my house and my neighbours and create a scary ice patch. I finally got rid of the rain barrel thinking the diversion mechanism was slowing the water down to the extent that it would allow the water to freeze. I have had the downspout replaced with 4" aluminum downspout which has frozen and is leaking again. Toronto plumbers are not supposed to reconnect downspouts and plus mine has been made completely inaccessible because I had a drain guy fix a leak in my basement (which he maintains was a result of the downspout not being disconnected properly). I still want to keep the rainwater flowing to the lawn. How can I configure the downspout so this freezing and leaking won't happen?

Hello, fellow Torontonian. Is there enough slope (you know, gradient) to allow the water to run down or is the bend parallel to the ground? The water only freezes because it is standing and not moving. Yeah, we have winter, but it's not that cold most of the time!
Think about the Humber, it never freezes because it always flows.
You may have to shorten the down spout and attach a 22 or 45 degree join instead of a 90 degree angle and then continue the run at that angle to water your lawn.
The rain barrel is not the culprit and you may regret having gotten rid of it.

Get some heat tracing and wrap your downspout with the heat trace. This will keep the water from freezing and allow it to run out as designed.

hey wassup buddie, well i think 1st of all you did a really wrong and crazy thing. But all the same,don't be a cheap boy,what makes you think that she has not done a similar thing also,since you said that she is also sexually active. But you just have to find a faster way of getting your result out before the due day elapses. well i think if she loves you and you really love her, you justhave to tell her what you did and also apologise for it, most especially you have to behave calm when doing this becos she might blow-up and all that kinda stuff...... If she walks away and insist on not talking to you,just give her some space and let her know you are really sorry (express it, say it, act it). I guess she will just get over it with time,depending on how you handle it and how you are able to calm her down...... Best wishes.......Alvin Gold
