The contraceptive pill prevents the lining of the womb thickening, reducing the amount of tissue to be shed during a period. It also reduces the severity of cramps and cuts down on some of the body chemicals and hormones that contribute to menstrual problems. The pill is actually quite commonly prescribed by doctors for the treatment of menstrual conditions.

It sounds like you've always had period symptoms, but the pill was treating them successfully. If you wish to stop taking the pill, consult with your doctor for an alternative treatment.

Lots of women have lots of different horrible symptoms before, during and after a period.

Time to deal with the symptoms or go back on the pill.

I dont understand why people go on the pill then come off it when it is working so well.

Because you suffer from oestrogen dominance - did you get breast pain and anger as well? - the hormones in the pill mask this as they stop the ovum from being released. Read up on it, lots of ways to prevent this without being on the pill. Being a herbalist I'm naturally biased towards herbal medicine, but it usually works.
