For anyone who has ordered one of the Harry Potter books online (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc).... did you receive your book in the mail the day it was released or did it take a few days?

I am debating whether to order 7 for delivery or just to pick it up day of...

Before book 6 was released, Amazon (and I think a few other online retailers) advertised release date delivery for Harry Potter only if you chose to pay for the Saturday shipping. I did this, thinking I could avoid all the lines etc. at the book stores. The only problem is that my book wasn't delivered until 2pm and I was anxiously awaiting it all day. (The delivery time-frame they give you is between 9 and 5)

They haven't advertised this yet so as of now, don't expect it. I imagine once they get more pre-orders, they'll do the same (if they found it profitable for them last time). Don't rush into pre-ordering though expecting a release date delivery. You can always pre-order later...they don't limit the number of orders they receive. The book's not going anywhere. Wait a bit and see what they do.

I, like you, am torn though because I want the book early in the day and don't want to be waiting around like last time. My father went to the grocery store that day first thing and he said they had tons there and there were no lines or anything...it was just like any other day. I think I'll attempt that this time. No one thinks of the grocery store to buy their newly released books, so that's probably where I'll be going, even if it is a bit more expensive. I'll pay the small difference to keep my sanity this time!

Last time, because I had to wait until the afternoon, I stayed up so late (early) to finish it in one go. It would have been nice to start sooner and finish sooner so I wasn't almost dead tired by the end of the book, with no energy to even think!

With book 6, a friend of ours got theirs from Amazon that day, but because we were at the store (we just went to Kroger, not a bookstore) at midnight, we had it several hours earlier. Here, UPS does not arrive until late afternoon, generally, so if you're in a hurry to get it, as in hours matter, it would be better to pick up a copy. But if late afternoon the same day is as good to you, go with the online order.

did it through Amazon, and they had the option to deliver the day of release. It cost a couple bucks extra for shipping that way.
