Hey, I'm a nerd in training so tell me what I'm doing wrong. I have a Linksys [wireless] router and a pretty decent DSL internet connection. When I go to my network setup page and forward the ports to correspond with my bittorrent program [6881 to 6889], the highest average that I've been able to maintain is 40 kb/s, which is decent, but definitely not as high as it should be. So what am I doing wrong, and why do my ports seem unopened/unforwarded? Thanks in advance. =)

If you have SP2 it limits the amount that can connect to you. I don't know where this program can be found but there is a program that will change that stuff. Also if a torrent has more downloaders than seeders than it is going to go slower. I am not totally sure about the ports thing though.

I agree that 40k down is not slow. You should disable any firewall options in your router. Sometimes torrents grab too many connections, and your router thinks it is an attack and will shut those connections down.

Also, make sure your upload speed is maxed out because that will affect your download speed for sure.

Also, pay attention to the amount of seeders in the torrent. This can also be responsible for a slow speed, but that is obvious.

Read the FAQ on your bit torrent client. Usually they post settings that work with the most popular model routers, like WRT54g, rangemax 240, etc.

If your router has this feature, you can also increase the number of "IP Filter Maximum Ports",

have you uploaded much? You have to create torrents to share and based on what you share you will be able to download faster. 40kbs is not that slow btw.
