When my central heater runs there is a bad smell. Sometimes even when its not running it stinks in the hallway near the heating unit. there also seems to be a smell sometimes when I run the dishwasher or washing machine.or maybe from the sink drain. I've looked through my ducts with a mirror and flash light and there are no dead mice or anything. What could be causing this? HELP!

If your heat is housed with the air conditioning coils, you may have a drain for the condensate that is connected to the sewer. It drains the water that condenses on the coils during the hot months when you run the air conditioner. While it should have a trap, it (the trap) can easily dry out the trap during the winter months. Try pouring a couple of cups of water on your air conditioner coils to see if it will seal back off (use warm water if it's in a cold area like the attic)

Consider a water leak from the dishwasher or sink drain soaking something at a point very close to a heating duct.

If you have had central air at one time, the old condensate line may still be hooked to the sewer lines and it's drawing air into the
heating system, assuming it is electric heat.

What does it smell like to you?? It might be the sewer vent pipe that goes to the outside. It could be clogged with leaves, could have a bird nest in it, or damaged in some other way.

Have you replaced the filter lately? Friend couldn't figure out a smell and found a dead critter in the filter.
