First, download Steve Gibson's free and great Windows Gizmo

http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

One of the options is to use it to gracefully shutdown the system.

Second, you want to schedule the execution of the gizmo with the shutdown option. So access the Task Manager. (On Windows98SE this is in the Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools
under the label "Scheduled Tasks". Access this and create a new such task, running the gizmo with "shutdown" as the argument passed to it; one of the other tabs lets you schedule it whenever you want.

If you are running XP, this will no doubt be a bit different, but it's there.

You can do that but the procedures vary from one brand to another brand so you will have to check the documentation.
