They're not really 1's and 0's. With magnetic media, (hard drives, diskettes) it's an electromagnetic charge - on or off. On is represented by a 1, off is represented by a 0. With optical media, (CDs, DVDs) it's a tiny melted or pressed spot in the disk media layer. A spot is 1, no spot is 0.
