I dunno about a new car for hauling dogs around! That is a good way to wreck the nice new interior!
Jeep Liberties are nice. I don't know if the trunk is big enough for two dogs, but with the seats down there would be plenty of room. They are a lot of fun to drive and will get you anywhere in any weather (once you get rid of the stock tires if you get the Goodyear HPs :-P) They may not get the best fuel economy, but they are good vehicles. I have had mine for over 3 years now and I absolutely love it. Of course, I would never let my dogs in is because they shed and get carsick...
Jeep also released the new Wrangler Unlimited, you may want to take a look at that. Please don't look at the Compass...that is a piece of junk and should not even be considered a Jeep. It doesn't even have a real 4x4 system.
The Nissan Xterra would be another option to consider. They are a little bit bigger overall, so I would assume the trunk space is more as well.
I am anti-Ford, so I wouldn't recommend the Escape...but that is just me. Ford- Found on road dead. Fix or repair daily. I know people who have issues with Fords.
The Subaru Outback or Impreza wouldn't be a bad choice. Have you looked at the Chevy Equinox? It's more of a crossover...but it looks pretty roomy.

For any new vehicle.. I would suggest that you do a test of the seats to see how comfortable you will be. This will sound kind of silly, but I normally sit in a new seat for 1 hour (this gives your body heat a time to work on the foam in the seats). Then if I am comfortable after the 1 hour, the seat fits me in the hips and length of the legs(hips to knees) it should be a good fit for you. As far as the dogs they will be fine in the rear of the vehicle as they can lay down. you may look for a split rear seat back. You should also compare prices to see what will fit your budget.

Yeah don't get a Chevy! Get a GMC instead if you decide on buying GM,
But of the two you mentioned the Ford would be best. Easier to get parts. Repairs are cheaper. Not in shop as long when work needed. Most mechanics in independent shops know how to work on Ford and GM cars.
Fords are a lot stouter built that GM vechiles something to think about especially if you drive a lot of rough roads.
My choices would be personally:
Ford 1st.
GMC 2nd
Dodge Durango 3rd.

We have an Avalanche. We also have 2 dogs. What we do is pop out the back panel on the bed, chain them to the hooks that are already at the back. If they want to stick their head out for fresh air they can, they can go up to the front of the bed if they want. Also prevents any hair getting inside the cab. One dog also likes to get car sick, she has never gotten sick with this arrangement and if she did, the bed is rubberized and we could just hose it out. Another plus with the dogs not being in the cab, when they have ridden in the cab, their claws scratched up the leather seats

Definitely look into the Santa Fe by Hyundai, it's new design has won accolades from across the globe. The back space can be used as space for the doggies, or used as optional third row seating. Check it out!

A van will usually get extra appropriate MPG and characteristic extra efficient area utilization than an SUV. there is an absolute palms-down suitable van on the industry and that's the Honda Odyssey. do no longer purchase yet another van devoid of using the Honda yet Mazda and Chrysler make a respectable van as nicely. circumvent Toyota in any respect costs and don't be fooled by employing their ridiculous merchandising.

i would say that if your dogs listen well then they will stay in the back of the car, but if they really don't listen then they might want to come closer to you and be right behind you. dogs like to have their head out side the window remember :) i think a ford escape would be good
