The jumper setting are on the rear of the device, on the left next to where you connect the ide cable. It is the 2 pins closest to the cable on the left. The cable has a slot to connect to, and the tab should be up. Open your computer case, follow the cable{s}.The secondary channel is the one your hard drive is not connected to. Plug it in, find a power connector, line up the round slots, and connect. Of course you must install the device. When you boot the computer will find the drive if you have done it correctly.

As for setting the jumper, it depends on the make and model of CD-R you're installing. Each manufacturer has its own way to make their product the master. So as Sashawit... says, it should have a manual that tells how to set the jumper.

Once you set the CD-R to master, open the computer and you should have 2 IDE ports next to each other where you plug in the ribbon cable. Just use the empty one and your CD-R will be the master on that port. If not 2 ports, set the CD-R to slave according to the manual and install it on an empty ribbon cable plug.

If you don't have the manual, go to the CD-R maker's web site for help on setting the jumpers.

I agree that you should read the manual, carefully. Study the schematics shown in the manual and you'll see there the switches and/or jumpers. Everything should be clearly labeled.

Read the manual. Most problems can be solved by reading the manual. The instructions are in the manual.
