I like "Learning Perl" by Phoenix and Schwartz, published by O'Reilly. It does a better job than most books in teaching good programming practices from the beginning, and putting what it's covering into a broader perspective. On the minus side for some, it doesn't spend a lot of time teaching basic programming concepts - it assumes you either know them or can pick it up as you go along. An easier book for a total beginner might be this online one by Cozens: http://www.perl.org/books/beginning-perl/

The book "Beginning PERL" by Simon Cozens and Peter Wainwright is excellent. I have an edition from a few years ago, so it might not be completely up to date. I have linked to the Barnes and Noble page for the edition I have in the sources section
