I'm 19 years old and I just recently found out I was pregnant. I have taken 3 at home tests and they have all been positive. My last period started on December 31st, so according to that I should be 4 1/2 weeks today. The only thing is that I live at home with my parents and I am a full time college student. I am not sure how my parents are going to take this situation and I am putting off telling them for a week or so, but I am not sure if it is okay to wait to go to the doctor, is it? When should I start taking the prenatal vitaims?!?! help me please..

You do need to go asap, if only to get started on the vitamins (very important for you & the baby!) and to make sure all is well so far. I can understand not wanting to tell your parents, I'm sure it's a scary thing, but they do need to know so they can be there to give you the support you will need over the next 9 months and beyond.

The earliest that you need to go would be around 6 weeks. And why are you waiting to tell your parents. Nothing is going to change in a week. If you are still at home that you really need to tell them b/c you are probably still on their health insurance and they are going to wonder what you ar going to the dr for. And you should start taking prenatals vitamins now. Your dr will probably give you a prescription but you can also get them over the counter.

You should go ahead and start the prenatals now. You can buy a bottle at any drug store or at Wal-mart. Most Dr's won't see you before 6-8 weeks anyway. I would go ahead and call and make the appointment and then when you feel comfortable, tell your parents. You can take care of a baby and go to college too. I did. You can do it hon!! Your parents may be more receptive about this than you think. I wish you the best of luck!!!

From what I gathered, you have not confirmed being pregnant except for the at home tests and not through a blood/urine test from a doctor's office or campus clinic. You should confirm and then, set an appt to visit the ob/gyn around your 6th week. You can start taking prenatal vitamins now, it can only help you. Good luck with telling your parents and good luck in your "continued" education in college.

You should go by at least 6 weeks. And yes you should be taking prenatal vitamins. You can go to planned parenthood and get a preggo test and vitamins. You should tell your parents as soon as possible. Just because your pregnant doesn't mean you have to quit school. You should definately finish school. It will be the best thing you can do so you can get a decent job to take care of you baby. I hope everything goes well for you...

You should begin with prenatals now... It is actually recommended that you begin taking them a few months before you get pregnant, but since many of us didnt exactly plan this wonderful gift, that rarely happens... The reason you should take them soon is because the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is when the most important things of your baby develop. For instance, taking folic acid before or very early in pregnancy, can protect against sipna bifida and other neural tube defects. Most doctors also want to see you before 12 weeks to see if everything seems normal and to scedule you an ultra sound as soon as possible so they can check for anything that may not be good or at least may require additional care such as eptopic pregnancies or multiple babies...

My OBGYN won't even see you until you are 8-10 weeks pregnant. If you're 4.5 weeks you still have a little bit to go before seeing the DR. My first appt, she prescribed my pre-natal vitamins (at 9 weeks). You can put off telling your parents a little longer but at some point they will find out whether you tell them or not...it would be better if you could tell them in your own way.

And you can still be a full-time college student! People have done it before. Trust me, that education will be very valuable to your baby later when you're able to get a good job. If your parents are unwilling to support you then talk with local churches, parenting/pregnancy organizations, and charities...check out WIC and getting government aid. You CAN do this! And you can hold on to your education while doing it. :)

Good luck!

First off you need to get to the doctor to confirm the pregnancy and start taking prenatal vitamins right away. Then after that you will only have to go to the doctor once a month until the middle of the 3rd trimester.

You should start you prenatal vitamins right now. I think you can wait a couple more weeks to go to the doctors but not past 10 wks. Why don't you call the doctor and see what they recommend. You can go to the Dr without telling your parents....you are 19.
