I was laid off 4 days before Christmas '06. I have been applying to job postings on monster and careerbuilder. What can I do to be more proactive in my job search. I have only had 2 interviews so far. I am so bored and end up wasting the day away surfing the internet. As each day passes I feel more hopeless and depressed. What should I do?

Take your resume and take it to places in your area. Do that as if it WAS your job. Then follow up in person and ask each place if theyre hiring. Make a pest of yourself.

Have you considered temping...I know it's unglamorous, but it gets you a "paid interview" and something do while you look for the job you really want...and looks better than a many-month gap on your resume.

I got a couple jobs this way, that eventually led to my career... (Mortgage/Real Estate broker). Good luck. It's also how my husband got started up again (after he moved to a new area)...he worked some crappy, crappy jobs, but it did lead to a good job with excellent benefits, and kept him from going crazy not getting a fast response to his resume.

Next...take a peek at your resume...I hire as part of my business and I've seen some ATROCIOUS resume's come across my desk...only crazy coot actually made it in excel--and it still didn't line up--and sadly that wasn't the worst thing about the resume. (although you are at least getting a couple interviews...so that's a good sign.)

Once you get the interview...did you seem like a happy person? Did you dress nicely?

Next...did you follow up with the people you interviewed with a thank you card or phone call?

Finally, if you are sure you're not getting hired by the people who interviewed you...perhaps you could send them a note or email asking if they have any honest feedback for you regarding your interview.

I really think temping is fabulous, and if I find myself jobless again, I'd do it again...even if it was a job I considered "beneath me" or my skills. But perhaps look at training/education...and spend some time volunteering somewhere--church, hospital, homeless shelter, animal shelter...something where you can possibly network, and at least feel good about your day.

Do what I did, work at a lower end job till something comes your way, don't give up the search and don't be afraid when looking for jobs on monster and careerbuilder to go ahead and give them a call.

Go get you a job (even if part-time so you still have time for job hunting) at a grocery store or somewhere that is always hiring until you get the job you really want and are qualified for. That way, you will have money to get gas and necessities and it will keep you active and you won't turn into an internet vegetable.

Look in the phone book for a temp agency, I worked as a temp packing boxes in a mom and pop co between college and my first full-time. I hire temps at the bank all the time. It lets you try out different things. If you don't like some place tell the agency to send you someplace else.

I am assuming you are already checking classified help wanted ads in your local newspapers? Have you tried the state employment service? They probably have a website with online job listings. Good Luck.

Did you post your resume on other job boards like Craigslist? Some thing will happen. It isn't what you know, but who you know to land a job. So, just don't give up hope.
