You're just too early for the Greek Carnival season which starts in Athens on the 8th February this year.
Go to one of the little kiosks when you get to Athens and check out The Athens News (every day but Monday) which will give you info on what's on in English.

At the moment, it is raining and cold. We have had a very warm winter but not at this moment.
There are many historic points of interest to visit in Athens.
the Parliament and changing of the guards
the Acropolis and Ancient Roman Agora
The National Museum
The SYNTAGMA SQUARE Metro which hosts some interesting archealogical findings.
Plaka - the old city with its picturesque cobble streets circling the foot the of the mighty Acropolis. There you can enjoy shopping, stopping off for a nice coffee in one of the many traditional style cafes, photography, and just taking it easy.
Monastiraki Flea Market. -Lots of junk but some interesting stuff too.
Lycabettus Hill, which is smack in the center of the Athens and offers a breathtaking view of the whole city. There is a restaurant and coffee shop on top and is accessible by funicular.
Ask your hotel to arrange an "Athens sightseeing day tour"
As for safety.... it is safe in comparison with other counties. Pickpocketing is a problem though, especially in the buses and metro. Do not keep anything in your outer pockets. If you are holding a bag of some sort, hold it securely in front of you at all times. DO KEEP AWAY from the area of OMONIA SQUARE after dark. It is full of immigrants, some of whom are very poor and theft is a higher risk there.
Another thing to watch out for are the taxis. For example, from your hotel to the city center, you shouldn't pay anything over 5-10 Euros. I am giving you the worse scenario of a traffic jam. If the driver charges you 50 Euro, then you know you're getting ripped off. Don't get paranoid, but if you do think somethings not right, ask him to go to the police with you. He will immediately lower the price. From the airport, with traffic, you should pay approx 25 Euro... more or less. I
Other than that, you can roam the streets at all hours and enjoy it. Athens is a small city which you can cover on foot, metro and buses.

Depends what blows your skirt. Athens has a great night life and we are talking about all night long till sun rise. Local music clubs or whatever else you desire, Latin? You have it Jazz? The Half Note by the cemetery. Also the Megaron near the Hilton may have something to titillate your fancy if you are interested in real music.
And yes Athens is the safest European capital to walk in. Save some unscrupulous taxi drivers who might take you for a ride.
I have been visiting there since 1988 spending more than 2-4 months at times and had had NO problem anywhere even in the shady parts of the city.
The book "Greece without tears" may help you if you wish to see non-touristy places.

I have been there for Jan & Feb before....its windy and cold but sun was shining and still had a good time. There is always something to find to do in Athens. I am female and have never felft threatened any where, but then am always with my Greek friends and beware of the Square the one told you about in the other answer. I died laughing when read one saying "Athens is a small city" ...its HUGE...but yes, you can walk every where and the taxis or city bus is used by most. Actually, I guess what she meant is that its small area go get to fun and good foods.

It's safe to go out at night.Perhaps safer than it could be in other countries. What the people are like depends on what you have used to think of what people should be like.So it depends on where you come from and what you might face as different in here. You haven't defined your origin. The weather is sunny but still cold the most of the day and I think it won't change in the next days.I haven't heard anything about rain so far.Don't arrange your clothing as if coming to Russia,or the rainy England. You can take your jacket, your pullover, your pairs of jeans and a pair of sunglasses may be useful in condition your eyes are sensitive to the sun.
As for entertainment check the below site out.It may help.
