The embryos in question belonged to people who were undergoing in vitro fertilization in an attempt to have babies. The whole process of doing in vitro fertilization is painful for the woman (to induce ovulation, she has to be given hormonal treatments that are extremely unpleasant to undergo, followed by saline flushing of the uterus to collect the ova for fertilization) and the process is costly, $50,000-60,000 per attempt at some clinics (costs vary depending on location and clinic), most of which is NOT covered by medical insurance. Some of the people who had embryos in that clinic awaiting implantation could not have afforded to undergo the procedure again, and some might not have been able to even if they had the money, because for medical reasons they had no more ova or sperm. So those frozen embryos represented their last chance to have children genetically related to them. That was, realistically, the reason for the effort to save the embryos.
Regarding the issue of whether an embryo is "alive" or not, of course it's alive, but the issue with regard to abortion and embryos is VIABILITY. A just-fertilized embryo is alive but is not viable until it implants in the uterine wall. If for some reason it fails to implant, it dies.
A significant percentage of the embryos that successfully implant in the uterine wall do not continue to develop, for reasons that range from hormonal imbalances of the mother, impairment of the embryo in some way, disease or injury processes, and factors that are still unknown.
It's estimated that as many as 30-40% of the ova that are fertilized in the human reproductive tract just never establish a pregnancy. So although an embryo represents a group of living cells that have the potential to develop into a human being, there is no guarantee that even under the best circumstances they ever will develop. So they represent a potential life.
I believe, and this is my personal belief only, that although I deplore the use of abortion as a means of birth control, it should remain available to all women. I'm 50, and any woman my age or older will remember the bad old days when abortion was illegal and many women, in desperation, resorted to abortionists who were no better than butchers, or even self-induced abortion using knitting needles, coat-hangers, and other objects. A woman who is desperate to abort a baby will find a way, and legal issues be damned.
I believe that if the anti-abortion factions really wanted to stop abortions, they would do the following:
--Educate, educate, educate women and men about birth control methods and availability of birth control. Birth control technology is so well-developed that nobody needs to conceive a baby they don't want.
--Make birth control methods available to all with minimal difficulty. Don't put obstacles in the way of people.
--Make it easier for women to collect child support from the fathers of their babies. I am convinced that if men are held accountable for the babies they father, they will become more responsible for using birth control themselves, rather than defaulting to the woman using it-- or not.
I know this is not the answer you were fishing for, but it's reality.

More blurring of the lines between embryos/fetuses and human beings. While embryos were "saved", human beings died! Just unbelievable that this is going on. I wonder if the owners of the embryos had more money than the people who died...
