My goats were really cold and shivering, so I looked on ebay for goat blankets (like mini horse blankets). But they seemed overpriced to me, so I went to Dollar General and bought men's sweatshirts and put them on my goats. (I'm serious!) They fit really well, but is it safe to leave them on my goats while I'm gone? Could they get hung up on something, even though the shirts aren't baggy on them? Serious answers, PLEASE! :)

We do the same thing for are goats in winter, we have never had a bad experience with it and most of the time if they do get hung up they just rip the cloth so provided that yours aren't weak (i really don't think that they are) they should be fine.

Hi! We also raise goats, on the coldest days & for the babies we put goat coats on them. The coats we make are like a saddle blanket with a hole at the top for the head to go thru & a piece of fabric to go around the goat's belly. We use velcro for attachment. If you make sure the head hole is big enough (esp. if your goats are horned) you'll have no problems. We make our coats out of material we find at the scrap section at Walmart or local fabric shops, usually some wierd color or patterned polar fleece. Cold weather isn't necessarily bad for goats, in fact it often helps kill of bad bad bacteria, but babies, expecting mamas, & weak goats can be severly affected by wind & persistant drafts.
A good source of info for new farmers raising goats is fiasco farms website.

i would think the shirts could cause a stranglation hazard if not watched, i would cut the arms off and make sure they are real tight. also look into building a shelter for them and put lots of hay on the floor, i just made one for my goats cot about 200$ in material and now they are toasty warm.

you keep goats!? thats so cool! what kind of material are the jumpers made of? just in case they do get caught, im sure it would rip before they hung themselves or something! its unlikely that would happen, id say they might snag on something but goats aren't stupid, they dont walk through bushes... most of the time...

if they are sweaters that unravel easily they may get caught on something and unravel a bit but I wouldnt thing that they could hurt them selves because of it. I would leave them on especially if its really cold out!

they make these coats for animals because they are tested and safe for them to wear! you could put your animals in danger by letting them wear human clothing
