Hi. I have a friend with a recording studio and i would like to record some songs. It is just for personal use, not for selling (eg, to give to my grandma lol!). so, i was just wondering if i record a song by someone else do i need to get their permission? I'm not a song writer, but i'd like to record some other peoples songs, just me and a piano. Is it illegal even if i'm not selling them or anything?

ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Performers) is a performing rights organization which licenses and collects royalties for performance of music. ASCAP's licensees encompass all who want to perform copyrighted music publicly. Of course, you're talking about a private performance which seems harmless. However, it still breaks copyright laws to record anyone's music, public or private (even churches have to pay royalties for a teeny, tiny church gathering of people if someone plays or sings anything). But I take it that you want to know how to make it "right" so my suggestion would be to simply write to the manager or song writer of the performer or you could probably even write to ASCAP and ask them what to do in your situation. I've acquired permission to use a famous musician's music on my website via email, which was very nice, easy and FAST. They probably wouldn't have cared either way, but I wanted to make absolutely SURE that it was okay and having it in writing makes me feel much better. :) Hope this helps...

You can buy karaoke versions which then give you the rights to sing them. If your friend owns a recording studio, he should know the ins and outs of what is allowed.

If you aren't going to sell it, then it doesn't infringe copyright laws. Besides, how would they know?
