Try a new mouse. Sounds like the button on your mouse is messed up.

try adjusting the "click speed" and make sure "spring-loading" is turned off (i.e. it doesn't open if you hold the cursor over it). Sometimes patience is an issue for me. I double click several times because system resources are being used, and when the buffer catches up I've got 2 or 3 windows open. Exercise patience before double clicking again, and move the mouse around to see if you've got a "busy cursor". As far as highlighting, it really depends on the software and what you are doing. If information is stored in cells, usually the first click will highlight the cell, and (after a pause) a second click will position the cursor within the cell. If you are talking about a word processor, there may be preferences that need to be adjusted. I personally can't stand "smart" word processors that try to do your work for you, because half the time they default to something you don't want.
