Technically a frat. is a male, collegiate, student society. Most have long histories and secret rituals dating back many, many years. On the surface they proclaim fellowship, charity, community involvement, etc...I am an alumni of a prominant frat. I went active in 1989. I'm on the fence as far as recommending joining. It definately extended my college career by a few years (too much partying). I often had the feeling my "brothers" were bought and not earned. They usually give guys a hard time for having outside friends, or friends in another frat, and are very big on conformity. We weren't at all about charity, community, etc... We were about chicks and parties. I saw many fu&*'d up things. Maybe your generation is more responsible than mine (we were basically criminals & idiots w/ Polo shirts). But, I can not say that I didn't have a blast (I did). And, I did make some lifelong friends. If you want my sage advice (which advice doesn't work-if it did we wouldn't be in this mess) I would say : 1. Think for yourself-make your own decision 2. You get out of a frat. exactly what you put in to it (i've never seen a more true example) 3. It might be a good idea to stay independent for the first full year-not just one semester. That way you will have a better idea of what you want to do. It may not sound like it, but I really do cherish my frat. days, at least the one's I remember. Always remember to be yourself no matter what. Also, never forget what you are really there for. Good Luck.
BTW-one of the fu&*'d up things I saw was a car bomb (molatof cocktail to be precise).

There are a lot of opinions about frats in general. Basically it's a club of ready-made friends. They party hard, and that's where their reputation comes from, but they actually do a lot of good as well. They do a lot of charity work and raise funds for various casues. They're a great way to network as well, as alumni are fiercely loyal to their frat.
There are some downsides as well. Depending on the fraternity, pledging can be a *****. Lots of partying can get you in trouble, but most frats require a certain GPA to remain there.
Your best bet is to go to rush on campus during rush week and see which one appeals the most to you. Good luck!

Are you in a fraternity/sorority? If not, nicely i think I actual have a splash explaining to do. in case you have ever watched Ramboo (first blood) or black hawk down, Ramboo and Sgt. hoot had a typical theory that they voiced out in the direction of the top and that i quote " human beings will by no skill understand why we do it." its the comparable with fraternities human beings by no skill fairly understand why we do the failings we do, why? nicely certainly they have by no skill fairly been there and finished that, they dont understand the individuals, and the traditions that folk undergo to flow into, they dont understand the sensation which you're feeling after having undertaken the struggles, to be particular they dont experience the cost of the cost being paid they purely think of they do. seem it up in a latin dictionary Frater/ Fratris - latin comprehend brother. and then positioned away the daydream hazings ask your self what do brothers do. a guy or woman who has by no skill been in a fraternity shouldn't settle for the superb to sentence themit using fact they dont fairly comprehend it that plenty. i might purely desire to indicate out that regardless of there's a skinny line between a company being a fraternity or gang team, there remains a line.Going decrease back to the subject count no count if to inspire or condemn those businesses, nicely i think of that we are already an exceedingly civilized society with the ideal standards, rules and all skill neccessary to verify peace and order, so I say purely bypass away the fraternities on my own, I used the be conscious fraternities to declare that they are guy or woman communities not as an entire, if a Frat crosses the line, they bypass it, punish them, not the entire physique of frats adult adult males and girls, no one joined any corporation to look undesirable, and each frat needs a stable call, and each frat has their by way of-rules besides, so in the event that they desire to have a stable acceptance and allow their frat to stay long and proceed present in a society/community then which would be as much as them, how they manage their participants. yet I say it back no one needs to look undesirable, especially situations it purely sounds like that. i might desire to shout out to all fratsmen and girls available in spite of frat you're that we are all brods and sis in suggestions and ideology shall all of us purely keep in mind that we are participants of Fraternities, Sororities, and Frasorities, not gangs. shall we keep it that way.

You really like capital letters. Don't join a fraternity. It will be a waste of your time. You don't need to pay to hang out and make friends.
