A DVD recorder can record DVD plus play them. A DVD player can only play them.

Well, DVD recorders obviously Recodr AND Playback DVDs, DVD players just playback.

You can also get DVD Recorders with in built hard drives, thus allowing you to record onto the machine and either transfer to a recordable DVD or not.
