Fantasy film... 70's or 80's... character falls in quicksand along side a road I belive...
The scene just keeps playing in my head and it is killing me.

You have to give us more. There were TONS of movies with a quicksand scene. A fantasy from the 70's or 80's, could it be The Never Ending Story? I think that one had a quicksand scene, but it wasn't by a road, as he was in a magical makebelieve world that didn't have roads.

Might be Neverending Story, but I think Wes Craven's Serpent and the Rainbow had a weird scene similar to that as well.

all these are good suggestions neverending story (and the horse's name is artax), krull, serpent and the rainbow, could be any one of them. i'm going with beastmaster, though. or maybe mad max beyond thunderdome.
