The main and the best elite four umpires who have made the umpiring more successful are Dickie Bird, Steve Bucknor, Simon Taufel and David Shepherd.
They are the masters of their own class and world class detecting ability in LBW, Run out etc.

Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar are the best at the moment, Brent Bowden (I refuse to pander to his ego and call him 'Billy') is good but too intrusive. Historically Dickie Bird may not have been the most accurate but he was consistent and everyone respected him, and you can't umpire without respect - just ask Darryl Hair!
Going back further Sid Buller, Frank Chester and Cec Pepper are among the legends of the game.

Dickie Bird was NOT a particularly "great" umpire..he was no better or worse than many others. He was simply a little more charismatic, and so got noticed more than most umpires.

I was at lords for dickie birds final test england v india on the monday with the game heading to a draw the ground was nearly empty... i also saw john motson that day too..
when dickie came out for the final session he had to wipe a tear away from his eye.. the crowd were invited onto the outfield in front of the pavillion for the presentation... a touching day for a man who loves cricket... i still have the scorecard with dickie on the front..

Dickie Bird - no question. No more answers accepted.

And I don't even like cricket, I can't understand anyone watching a game for 5 days that can end in a draw - dull. But Dickie is a rose among weeds.
