I bought a betta today, and I have him in a vase type thing with the roots of a plant going into the water from the opening. I was wondering with the plant in there, how often should I really feed him of his actual betta food?

Vase's or old fashioned fish bowls are considered inhumane to put fish in. They are actually banned in some states/cities.
The level of oxygen for them to breathe is very low in those.
As for the plant, the plant is not proper food for him/her. Feed it it's real food one or twice everyday.
The plant will probably eventually dirty the water, especially if its a flower since flowers are not suppose to live with fish.
Buy a normal rectangular tank and add rocks with REAL aquarium plants and a castle or some sort of toy for the fish to enjoy.
If you have the money, get a decent filter for the tank as well.
Hope this helped, enjoy your new Betta. =)

Please get the plant out of there, or better yet- get a real tank. Feed him daily. Bettas are carnivores. The only reason they eat the plant roots is out of starvation. You have no idea how many bettas in this situation die daily because of starvation. Keeping them in this situation is a horrible practice purely for decoration. Bettas also need to breath air from the top of the tank and the plant blocks most of the oxygen. Change the water 50% twice weekly at least in here. Bettas really should be in a heated environment as well.

Really most betta vases are death traps. A betta is a carnivore, need access to the surface for air (yes unlike most fish he can drown), and clean water. Really you should read betta talk. It can be made to work, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. (I'm a real fan of 5 gallon tank with filters.)

always feed your betta twice a day. they really aren't that fond of nibbling on plant roots. they will to survive but they eat mosquito larvae in the wild. if you get pellets three make a meal -- its easy.

always make sure your betta has room to breath at the top -- bettas are fish but don't breathe underwater -- they need to make it to the top.

change the water weekly. the plant helps lower the waste in the water but it doesn't do it completely. change the water.

Normally. I don't think he's going to eat the plant, and I don't think the plant has anything to do with his eating habits. But um...I probably wouldn't keep him with a real plant, because when you change his water once a week, it will be kinda of weird trying to do that with a live plant. Any pet store will have fake plants to stick in there so that he has something to swim around. Hope this helps.
