Hi Zane,

I read this book by accident. I was looking for books in English while I was in France. Even though I was really too old to be reading the book (24) at the time, it was the only one I could find in English. This is what I remember of the timeline:

1. Stanley Yelnats finds a pair of tennis shoes which have fallen out of a passing truck. Unfortunately, a pair of shoes donated by basketball great Clyde "Sweetfeet" Livingston to a celebrity auction.

2. Almost immediately Stanley is arrested. and sent to a camp for "bad boys," Camp Green Lake. But it is anything but what it seems. It is an arrid waste and the boys are forced to spend their days mindlessly digging holes.

3. The camp's warden, a vicious woman named , thinks that digging holes will somehow build the boy's character.

4.It doesn't take long for Stanley to realize there's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. The boys are digging holes because the treacherous warden is searching for something, and before long Stanley begins his own search—for the truth.

Now, I could tell you exactly what Stanley finds when he begins his own search, but I don't want to ruin the plot for you. I agree with I_am_Jean, you should read the book yourself. I don't want to spoil your fun! The sources below will help if you get stuck. Good luck!

Have you read the book? It is quite clear in the book what the relationships are.
The two boys are descendants of two of the original characters in the story within the story. I think one is a generation further removed.
Don't know exact details as it is so long since I read the book
